Project Lifesaver

Jersey Shore, PA (June 25, 2009) - With a little less than $1,700 more, precious life-saving equipment could be on its way to the Jersey Shore area.

The Jersey Shore Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.) is one of only two police departments in the area to become involved in "Project Lifesaver," a public safety program that uses state-of-the-art technology to help protect victims of all ages who suffer from dementia-like disorders that make them more prone to wander and become lost.

"Project Lifesaver" started in 1999 in Virginia and internationally, has made over 1,800 rescues with an average recovery time of less than 30 minutes.

An individual who is deemed eligible by Hope Enterprises (an organization that provides community services to those with mental retardation), would be given a "Care Trak" bracelet with a radio transmitter that sends off a signal every second that is used for tracking. The police department then has a receiver that tracks the bracelets throughout the county when a victim becomes lost.

The South Williamsport Police Department implemented the project in this area and houses the only tracking equipment in the county. If Jersey Shore's police department had their own equipment, recovery time could be cut in half.

Detective Dan Hull and Officer Nate Deremer of the Jersey Shore Police Department are presently the trained officers in the Jersey Shore area. "There are currently only two people with bracelets in the Jersey Shore area, but there are definitely a lot more that could benefit," said Hull.

The Jersey Shore Hospital's Community Disaster Team is helping fundraise for the Jersey Shore Police Department's efforts to raise money to purchase their own tracking equipment. Currently, $820 has been raised toward the project, but $1,700 more is still needed.

Many local businesses have already made contributions to the project, which include the Jersey Shore School Board, Jersey Shore Lions Club, Jersey Shore Lioness Group and the Fraternal Order of Police.
