Staying Active During Winter Weather
Keeping active helps strengthen bones and muscle, maintain flexibility, and increase stamina and vitality. Staying active during the winter also decreases the likelihood of injury once spring rolls around. Look to your community for answers about numerous exercise possibilities, even in the winter. Joining a gym for the winter is a perfect way to escape the cold temperatures outside. Gyms offer a variety of equipment, strengthening, aerobic, or yoga classes, and many offer a swimming pool to help keep in shape. Folks that like to walk can go to the local grocery store, department store, or shopping mall to walk laps in a warm, safe environment. As long as the sidewalks are clear, it is ok to continue to walk outside. Just dress appropriately for the weather. A brisk walk in the cool air can be very revitalizing. Another option for keeping yourself like a well-oiled machine is to take a dance class in your neighborhood studio. You can tap, jazz or even waltz your way to good health. Many recreation facilities, such as the local YMCAs also offer a Silver Sneakers aerobics program for elderly individuals. If you are limited in your walking ability, don’t discount laps in your hallway or around your house as a great option for increasing walking capacity. There are also many of you out there who look forward to winter because of the sporting opportunities, such as cross-country skiing. This event is an excellent form of aerobic and strengthening exercise, along with downhill skiing or even snowboarding. Ice-skating will also increase strength, balance, and endurance, just as sledding with the kids will, especially if you’re climbing up the hill several times! If the winter weather truly does not allow you to go outdoors to exercise, there are many options for exercising within the home as well. For those who can afford exercise equipment, a treadmill or stationary bike is a great idea. Less costly options include checking out an exercise video or DVD at the library or local video rental store. There are also a large variety of exercise programs on television, which include aerobics, strengthening, pilates, and yoga. Try a few different ones, see what works best for you, and stick with it. If the shows aren’t on at a convenient time, you can record them and practice the exercises when it fits into your own schedule. It doesn’t matter what activity you choose, the important thing to remember is that if you keep moving and stay active this winter, you’re more likely to be ready for the warm spring months when they roll around again. The exercise will also help your mood, help you to stay strong, help you stay healthier, and bring you more enjoyment this winter.
